50 Plates333 NW 13th AvePortland, Oregon |
This restaurant features small plates with the idea that the menu will contain something that would be popular in each of the 50 states. One can order a pate with 3 tiny sandwiches, for example. There are many, many choices. It is a lot of fun! In the 2 times I have eaten there, once for lunch and once for dinner, it was very busy and a bit noisy. If you enjoy liveliness and don't mind some noise, it's a great place. |

Alchemy Jeweler1022 NW Lovejoy StPortland, Oregon |
Designing a custom piece of jewelry is one of the most enriching and rewarding processes you can experience. To take your unique personality and put it into a jeweled work of art, either for yourself or as a gift, can make it your most personal and prized possession. At Alchemy, we are honored to have the opportunity to work with you and create something that is uniquely yours and can be treasured for many years to come. Although you may believe that custom made jewelry will have a higher cost than something from the case, it’s not always true. Most of the time, we can produce a high quality, beautiful, stylish custom ring for less than many stores can sell an item of similar quality. The reason is that we create our jewelry in-house. We are a locally owned and efficient small business therefore can sell at a significantly lower markup. |

Aveda Institute325 NW 13th AvePortland, Oregon |
The Aveda Institute opened in Portland in January on the corner of NW13th and Flanders. In addition to its great location you cannot beat the prices at this place. A haircut is only $13 and since it is a school they do not accept tips. This is not your usual beauty school, not only do they deliever to the quality that one would expect given the Aveda name, but there are multiple instructors ready to help if needed and required to consult on every client. If you do go there for a haircut. Let me reccommend Michelle, she gave me a great Reese Witherspoon style haircut that I absolutely adore. Additionally, she is a member of the first class to go through the school, so she is one of the more experienced students, which is evident given her attention to detail and skill with fine hair. If you cannot get in to see Michelle then ask to be placed with a senior or ask for the student with the seat closest to the windows near the street. Students stations are arranged by experience (year level) so the closer you are to the street the longer your student has been at the school. Since it is a school, I experienced a long wait and even missed my eye brow wax appointment because my haircut went so far over, but given the money and quality it is a sacrifice I am happy to make. Plus it gives me an excuse to add a pedicure to my rescheduled appointment. Perhaps best of all they accept and will cater to same day appointments. |

Babette's sense of design is rooted in the mid-20th Centrury modernist architecture, industrial and graphic design. Baja Fresh1121 W Burnside StPortland, Oregon |
It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to bring our customers the Baja Fresh experience. Fresh ingredients, expert preparation, clean cheerful surroundings, genuine smiles, value for the dollar, and prompt courteous service are a tall order to fill...and our people do it, day in and day out. We're picky in how we prepare our food. We buy the best tomatoes, onions, peppers, and spices, making our numerous fresh salsas every day. We crush only the finest, ripest avocados for our guacamole in small batches all day long to ensure freshness. All this freshly prepared food takes a lot of extra effort, but our customers really eat it up. The one thing that distinguishes Baja Fresh from everyone else is our commitment to freshness. At each of our locations your food is made to order and prepared FRESH. It's the only way to serve food and that's why it's the only way we do it! |

Bluehour250 NW 13th AvePortland, Oregon |
Bluehour means different things to different people. In French literature it describes any time of day "of heightened emotion." In Portland, it has come to mean" great place to dine." As the premier modern restaurant in the Pearl District, Bluehour opened its doors in 2000, with what Gourmet Magazine describes as "the most sophisticated, contemporary food in town." Guests choose between the elegant dining room or the casual cafe and bar. Simple, delicious and classic describes the Mediterranean cuisine executive chef Kenny Giambalvo creates in the Bluehour kitchen each night. The fresh menu is printed daily but Bluehour standards remain like the pillowy potato gnocchi with black truffle, and the perfectly seared bacon wrapped sea scallops. |

Icebreaker Touch Lab Retail Store1109 W Burnside StPortland, Oregon |
It has become de rigeur for foodies to know whence their table fare came. Now an outdoor clothing producer has opened its business wide so that consumers can trace their clothes back to their origin. And it's not an oil well. Unlike the outdoor wear that is made from oil-based synthetics, Icebreaker, a small outdoor-apparel business based in New Zealand, uses merino wool, a lightweight, strong and silky-soft natural fabric, for all of its clothes. Merino, of course, comes off the backs of sheep. These particular sheep live the good life in the southern Alps of New Zealand, where the temperatures range from really cold to really hot. As a result, these big-horned beauties have evolved to have a super-fine, super-thick fleece. The fine fibres allow it to breathe in the hot summer months, while the thick winter coat keeps them warm. Those fine fibres aren't itchy because they flex when they come in contact with skin. Italian designers have long used merino for men's suits and fine sweaters, but now it is gaining a lot of traction in the active-wear world because it's so great at wicking moisture and holding warmth if you are caught in a downpour. |

On the day Alfred Peet opened his first coffee store on the corner of Walnut and Vine Streets in Berkeley, CA, he quietly began a revolution in the way Americans experienced the taste and quality of their coffee – a revolution that persists to this day. Born in Holland, Alfred Peet grew up in the coffee trade and moved to America after World War II. Appalled at the poor quality of coffee being consumed by Americans, he became inspired to open the first Peet’s Coffee & Tea store on April 1, 1966. His style of coffee was a radical departure from what was then available, emphasizing smaller batches, freshness, superior quality beans, and a darker roasting style that produced coffee with richness and complexity. By 1969, Peet’s Coffee & Tea became a gathering place for coffee devotees, and this success attracted other artisan food purveyors to the neighborhood, which soon became known as the Gourmet Ghetto. Alfred Peet further catalyzed the specialty coffee movement when he mentored and inspired a generation of coffee entrepreneurs, including the founders of Starbucks, whom he supplied with Peet’s roasted beans during their first years of operation. Over the past four decades, Peet’s growth has been fueled by ever-increasing numbers of coffee lovers in the San Francisco Bay Area and across the nation. With each generation of Peet’s leadership, we have remained true to the quality tenets of our founder, inspired by the same unrelenting pursuit of quality. Our purpose has not changed since 1966 – to seek out opportunities to raise the expectations of American coffee drinkers by attracting and serving those who truly love the taste of coffee, for whom a cup of coffee could only mean a cup of Peet’s. |

Founded in 1988, Portland Center Stage attracts more than 90,000 theatergoers annually. With five mainstage and two second-stage productions each season, PCS produces a blend of classical, contemporary and world premiere works, in addition to its annual summer playwrights' festival, Just Add Water/West. The performance space includes a 599-seat main stage and a 200-seat black-box theater. In typical Portland fashion, the armory’s renovation was completed as a pioneering green project. Recess in the Pearl1420 NW Lovejoy StPortland, Oregon |
When LeRae was four she fell in love with a dog outside of school. When her mother, Carol, came down from her PTA meeting, the dog was sitting in the car ready to go home. Luckily, Carol was as big of a sucker for dogs so the only child got a new friend. Sis became her best friend and was ever so loyal since being rescued from a life of abandonment. Sis went to kindergarten with LeRae and then saw her off to college. Tears swell up as LeRae speaks of her favorite companion. Her love for dogs is stronger than ever and the support of giving dogs, like Sis a home, is the foundation for Recess in the Pearl. Recess in the Pearl is a dog walking and in~home boarding service started in September by a local Pearl resident, LeRae Hunt. After finding her dream job in New York City as a part time dog walker, it made perfect sense to come home and move the leash out west. Recess in the Pearl stands apart from other like services, due to its service standards and approach to dog walking. A meet and greet is set up to get to know your dog in its environment to learn about all the quirks that only the owner would know. You will have an opportunity to discuss previous dog walking and boarding experiences, as well as what happened over the weekend. The walker should become well acquainted with your dog and the owner as they will be spending time together. Having a small service versus an agency allows you to know who is with your dog. Each walk is personalized to fit your dog's routine and schedule. "It's the dogs walk, if he wants to spend 5 minutes smelling a bush, that's what we'll do." In an effort to support the rescue agencies that make a huge difference in the Portland area, fifty cents from each walk is donated to local pet rescue missions. LeRae is currently involved with Oregon Dog Rescue and The Pixie Project and rotates the receiving organization monthly. "I learn about an new organization all the time, and it's important to support everyone with this cause." In addition to the donation of each walk if you are an owner of a rescue dog, a dollar is deducted from your walk price as a thank you for giving a dog a home. Recess in the Pearl is proud to be a member of the Pearl District Business Association by working and living in the community. LeRae has traveled the world as an international flight attendant and to her; this is where her heart belongs. "I love the neighborhood and it is wonderful to finally find the dream job where I can be here all the time." Look for LeRae and her pooches walking around the Pearl or visit the website for further information on making your pups day! |
